The first step is to think about words that can be used when describing vacations. You may want to encourage your students to select someone who attends your school as the recipient of their postcard.Before you write the letter, find out some specifics about why the student needs it.
A recommendation letter for dental school differs greatly from a letter in support of an application to art school or a letter for a summer job opportunity. Now have students make markings on the back of the postcard to show a place for address, stamp, and writing. Share postcards as a whole group, allowing students to explain their image.
Have students choose a special person to send their postcards to and scaffold them as they write. Using postcards in class can be a motivating writing task and add a level of stimulation for students. My students have always been very fond of this activity as they don't have to write too much and it involves a level of communication and imagination.
Now ask them to write the postcard to a friend telling them about their imaginary. In addition, it may be a great service project for the whole school or individual students. A student reaching out through postcards to kids with a life threatening illness is an easy way to touch the lives of children who are fighting to survive!
